Elon Musk tweeted Thursday that he was launching xAI, a game studio focused on creating video games from the ground up using AI.

Musk indicated that the studio’s goal is to offer an alternative to large game studios driving narratives surrounding game culture. The original tweet Musk retweeted also criticized gaming journalists for controlling the narrative surrounding gamers.

xAI is a startup company which has been developing Twitter’s Grok AI chatbot. The company has supposedly developed a tool to create video games using generative AI. Neither xAI nor Musk have given any details about any games that xAI might be working on.

This development comes months after the release of Oasis, a Minecraft clone synthesized entirely using generative AI. Two startups, Etched and Decart, developed the AI Minecraft clone partially by feeding the AI model thousands of hours of Minecraft videos.

Musk founded xAI in 2023 primarily to work on the Grok project. Grok has been integrated into Musk’s Twitter platform and is intended in part to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT large language model.
