Nobuo Uematsu, the composer behind the iconic soundtracks of the Final Fantasy franchise, announced Tuesday that his work on the upcoming FANTASIAN Neo Dimension would be his last.
In a 12-second video posted to the FANTASIAN Neo Dimension Twitter account, Uematsu broke the news that he would no longer be creating game scores.
“This is my final project as a composer of video game music,” Uematsu said in his brief remarks. “I hope you’ll pick it up and play it!”
Square Enix’s upcoming JRPG caps Uematsu’s 37 year career, which he spent working almost exclusively with the publisher. Of the 16 mainline Final Fantasy games, Uematsu created the score for 12 of them, and worked with one or more partners on other games in the franchise.
Uematsu’s other works include Chrono Trigger and the opening theme for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Outside of video games, Uematsu has also worked on six films and owns a Japanese record label called Dog Ear Records.
