Fans of horror games certainly have a lot to look forward to on the PlayStation 5, as the genre accounted for a fifth of Sony’s State of Play lineup. Here is every game announcement from Tuesday’s presentation.

Updates to Astro Bot

Astro Bot zooms through space with his friends

Sony kicked off the event by announcing five new speedrun levels in their hit new mascot game Astro Bot, releasing for free this fall. The game took the gaming world by storm, endearing itself to both fans and critics alike. One of the most challenging portions of the 3D platformer are the speedrun levels, and this new update gives more of those challenges to those who cleared them all.

The Midnight Walk

Players take control of this creature in The Midnight Walk

A brand new horror game with a claymation art style kicked off the new game announcements. Developed by Moon Hood, The Midnight Walk features a protagonist with the ability to defend itself by spewing flames from its head at its surreal horror enemies. The claymation characters and set pieces arguably make The Midnight Walk the most visually unique game in the entire presentation, and contribute to the creepy atmosphere. The Midnight Walk will be available on both the PS5 and the PSVR2, although there was no release date given.

Hell is Us

One of the primary antagonists in Hell is Us

Hell is Us is a new action horror game set after the downfall of civilization following the breakout of some unnamed disease. The game uses some surreal horror elements for some of it’s antagonists, while the player controls a man armed with a sword and a drone. The details surrounding the game still appear to be fairly vague, and no release date was given for the game.

Metro Awakening VR

A creature encounter in Metro Awakening VR

Deep Silver is publishing a new game in the Metro series, this one exclusive to PSVR2. It was the first major franchise installment announced in the presentation, with the previous Metro game releasing in February of 2019. The protagonist is investigating cult activity in the metro tunnels, and in keeping with the rest of the presentation leans heavily into the horror aspect of the series. The game releases Nov 7 of this year.

Archeage Chronicles

An overhead image of Auroria

Set in a medieval fantasy world, Archeage Chronicles falls under the second most common theme of the State of Play presentation: killing dragons. Developed by kakaogames and xlgames, this Soulslike is set in a kingdom called Auroria, populated with dragons, assassins and zombies. The game is slated for a 2025 release date.

Palworld

The subject of an alleged patent infringement

This is a big one. The embattled creature collector game from Pocketpair released as the State of Play begun, openly defying Nintendo and The Pokémon Company as they sue the Palworld developers for patent infringement. Though the trailer showed off nothing new about the lightning rod indie game, Sony has definitively taken a side in the Pocketpair-Nintendo dispute.

Lunar Remastered Collection

Embarrassingly, nobody at Game Wrecks knows the name of this location. Do you?

The original developers of the PSX JRPG Lunar compiled the first and second games with updated visuals while still retaining the pixelated art style. The remasters do not appear to add any new game mechanics, although typically developers avoid inundating remasters with new features to give players the authentic experience of the original game. The collection is coming to both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 sometime in Spring 2025.

TMNT Shredder’s Revenge

A gecko named Mona Lisa

In their briefest announcement of the show, Sony announced two DLCs for the beat-em-up game, the first one being the Radical Reptiles update. This DLC adds Mondo Gecko and Mona Lisa as playable characters. The second update adds the soundtrack of the original arcade game as free DLC. Both updates released after the conclusion of the presentation.

Sonic x Shadow Generations

Rumor has it that Mark Cerny downgraded this character model to sell us on the PS5 Pro

Sony showed of an admittedly rough looking in-game cutscene of Shadow the Hedgehog in the PlayStation 5 version of Sonic x Shadow Generations. Just like in the upcoming movie, the legendary Keanu Reeves voices the dark hedgehog in the digital deluxe version of the game. Alternatively, players can buy the standard game and separately purchase the Movie Pack containing the film voice actors. Those who purchase the digital deluxe edition of Sonic x Shadow Generations are able to play the game three days early.

Fantasian Neo Dimension

Yes, those buildings are hand-crafted!

This new JRPG features sets with over 150 handmade dioramas, giving the game a more realistic feel. Fantasian Neo Dimension is unique in that the player can delay multiple random encounters to fight all the foes at once. It is a PlayStation 5 exclusive releasing Dec 5 of this year.

Alan Wake II: The Lake House

The abandoned Federal Bureau of Control black site’s lobby

Alan Wake II‘s newest expansion resumed the horror theme of this State of Play showcase with The Lake House, exclusive to the deluxe edition of the game. This expansion takes place in an abandoned Federal Bureau of Control facility. Alan Wake II received an expansion called Night Springs earlier this year, and the quality of that addition put Alan Wake II squarely in contention for Best Ongoing Game at The Game Awards. The Lake House is slated for release sometime in October.

Hitman World of Assassination

Agent 47 showcases his iconic disregard for human life

IOI’s action-stealth series has come to PSVR2. Containing multiple missions from multiple Hitman games, Hitman: World of Assassination allows players to see through Agent 47’s cold, unfeeling eyes and use VR-exclusive features such as dual wielding pistols. The game is coming to the PSVR2 this December.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered

The new graphics of an old classic

This collection got leaked hours before the presentation, sporting updated visuals and little else. Although it does not appear that Crystal Dynamics did much more than create HD visuals for the game, fans have been wanting a way to play this original PlayStation classic on modern consoles. The game is releasing for the PS5 and PS4 on December 10.

Fear the Spotlight

A spotlight in the game, evidently the object of the protagonist’s fears

Set inside a typical school, Fear the Spotlight is yet another action horror game. Blumhouse Games took inspiration from the style of PSX games to deliver “atmospheric polygonal scares.” Fear the Spotlight has a graphical haze reminiscent of the original Resident Evil on the PSX, or even Silent Hill on the PlayStation 2, aiming to give longtime horror game fans a feel of nostalgia. The game is releasing on both the PS5 and PS4 on Oct 22.

Towers of Aghasba

A player with her garden in Towers of Aghasba

Towers of Aghasba is an open world survival game in which the player works to build a massive civilization on their island. Online multiplayer allows others to visit and contribute to your island, which contains a variety of creatures and NPCs. The game will be available in early access some time in November.

Lego Fortnite Splitscreen and controller

Upcoming Fortnite controller

Lego Fortnite (which, for those unaware, is an entirely different game from Fortnite) is receiving an update allowing for split-screen multiplayer. Previously, players could only play with each other in the game using two different consoles, but this new update allows friends and family to join each other on one screen. The update announcement came with the reveal of a new Dualsense controller, light blue in color with graffiti-style Fortnite designs adorning the body. Neither update nor controller got a definitive release date, although pre-orders for the controller start Oct 3.

Dynasty Warriors Origins

The nameless main character charges into battle against the Yellow Turbans

Koei Tecmo announced a Jan 17 release date for the latest entry in the Dynasty Warriors franchise. The hack-and-slash takes place during the turbulent Three Kingdoms era of ancient Chinese history, specifically the rise of the warlords in the Yellow Turban Rebellion. The game was initially revealed in May, although this is the first time we are getting significant details.

Monster Hunter Wilds

This latest Monster Hunter entry follows four adventurers in their fight against the White Wraith. The trailer showed almost exclusively in-game cutscenes, though it did show a few clips of monster fights. It is scheduled for a Feb 28 release, with pre-orders opening immediately following the presentation.

Lego Horizon Adventures

The Lego variation of the PlayStation exclusive is finally coming home. Releasing Nov 14, Lego Horizon Adventures was inexplicably only highlighted for the Nintendo Switch since its reveal. While it was difficult to imagine that Nintendo would have a Switch exclusive starring Sony IP characters, this was the first official confirmation of the game for what should have been its home console. The game takes on a far more campy tone than the mainline Horizon games, with Aloy’s journey seeming more like a buddy comedy than gripping adventure. That said, the major tonal shift stands to reason, given that the game revolves around Legos.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

For the soulless few who were dissatisfied with the Lego offering of the game, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered was announced for a Halloween release date. This was another game that was all but confirmed to be a part of this presentation beforehand, this leak coming days prior to the presentation. Fans were confused since the game runs very well on the PlayStation 5, and the fact that the game is available to owners of the PlayStation 4 as a $10 upgrade does not do much to dispel that confusion.

Stellar Blade x Nier Automata

This would be the second announcement for a game at the center of a legal battle, for those keeping score. The lawsuit brought from an antiquated media company of the same name did not deter Shift Up from adding a photo mode and collaborating with PlatinumGames to bring 2B from Nier: Automata to their game. Sony did not give any details about what role 2B will play in Stellar Blade, only that the update would go live later this year.,

Three new console and controller colors

Sony revealed the Chroma Collection of consoles as Mark Cerny attempted to sell the world on the PS5 Pro again. The hardware comes in chrome green, chrome blue and all white variants, with the PS5 Slim being the PlayStation 5 model of choice for this limited release. The release date was unspecified, but pre-orders will begin Oct 3.

Ghost of Yotei

Shortly after showing off games optimized for the PS5 Pro, Sony slipped in the announcement of the sequel to the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, this time following the story of a female shadowy warrior on the mountain of Yotei. The game is slated for a 2025 release.
