The presenters touted this year as the “fearless” year of Shadow the Hedgehog, looking to “inspire fans to break barriers, just like Shadow.” The campaign is reminiscent of Nintendo’s Year of Luigi, giving the secondary character in the franchise an increased share of the spotlight. In addition to features in running Sonic projects, Shadow the Hedgehog is getting a Lego minifigure in new game-related sets in both a standard variant and Chaos variant.
Sega opened the show announcing Sonic Rumble, a mobile battle royale game in which 32 players compete against each other in multiple game modes. The game has no official release date, although it is slated to come out “this winter.” It was the only new game of any kind made by Sega announced in the show
In addition to getting some of his own new games, Sonic is coming to other games as playable characters. Notably, the Blue Blur is making a cameo in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Rumble and Two Point Museum. Sega also announced a partnership with the casual driving range TopGolf, allowing golfers to play an exclusive
Aside from games, Sega teased an eight-part series of animated shorts about the Chao creatures from the Sonic Adventure series, as well as a DC Comics crossover with the Sonic cast starring as the iconic heroes. The comics will release in March of 2025, and the collaboration will last through 2026. Shadow the Hedgehog will star in a third animated series on YouTube called Sonic x Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings, featuring Maria Robotnik, the daughter of the Sonic antagonist.
Sega showed off more of the upcoming Sonic x Shadow: Generations game, showing off some Shadow-based gameplay and teasing Maria Robotnik’s presence in the game.
