After a reported dispute over profit margins, Sony has ended their partnership with Intel and has entrusted AMD with providing chips for their next console.

Intel apparently wanted a percentage of the PlayStation 6’s profits that was too high for Sony’s liking. Additionally, the Intel chips would have compromised the PlayStation 6’s backwards compatibility.

The PlayStation 6 is still a long way from announcement, with one report stating that no new console would from Sony before 2028, with an announcement likely coming no earlier than 2027.

Ironically, Sony’s disapproval of Intel’s profit-sharing scheme is very reminiscent of Nintendo’s split with Sony on the Nintendo PlayStation project, which ultimately led to Sony creating their own console of the same name and becoming a dominant force in the industry.
