Though the sun has yet to set on Astro Bot‘s launch day, the sequel to the PlayStation 5’s pack-in game has picked up a 94 on Metacritic, making it one of the highest rated 3D platformers of all time.
Critics are particularly fond of the multiple homages to PlayStation’s history, with Checkpoint Gaming calling it “a vibrant celebration of PlayStation’s storied history.” GameSpew, which gave the new release a perfect score, said that “to play Astro Bot is to love Astro Bot, it’s as simple as that.”
The ratings surge has earned Astro Bot the 76th highest ranking game of any genre or platform in Metacritic’s history. It is the sixth highest ranking game to release for the PlayStation 5, trailing only heavy-hitters such as God of War: Ragnarok, The Witcher 3 and Elden Ring.
Astro Bot released after three years of development with a reported $20 million budget, drawing contrast between itself and the Sony exclusive Concord, which was delisted despite an eight year development cycle and a $200 million budget.
